Nature In The Classroom

The average child spends 8 hours per day in front of a screen and 10 minutes outside. By the time a child turns 8, they will have spent a year of their life in front of a screen. This inspired me to launch Nature In The Classroom to nurture a child’s connection to the natural environment. Nature In The Classroom donates ceiling murals of tree canopies to elementary schools. Research shows that viewing nature outside classroom windows or images of trees boosts academic achievement, creativity, problem solving, focus, attention, engagement, and language skills in students.

Nature In The Classroom completed a two-year pilot study to see how ceiling murals of tree canopies impact the elementary classroom. Anecdotal feedback from teachers validates the science. Students settle down quicker giving them more time to teach. Students say they are happier and the trees are the reason they like coming to school.

We have partnered with The University of North Carolina at Greensboro to conduct a two-year study to measure the impact of tree canopy ceiling murals on children’s learning. We need to raise funds to print and install ceilings, and cover the university’s cost to conduct the study. Please consider helping give visibility to our fundraiser.

Nature In The Classroom is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to enhance academic performance, social-emotional development and nurture a connection to the natural environment by donating tree canopy ceiling murals to educational settings.
