My Story...
I was disadvantaged both genetically and environmentally. Depression - the serious kind - clinical depression - runs on my dad's side of the family. And anxiety was a way of life for my mom. I had mental health problems coming at me from all sides! But I didn't take it for granted that it was inevitable that I would be depressed all my life. I have had MANY years of therapy and worked really hard to be the happy, calm person I am today.
I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder when I was a teen. Looking back I had been depressed my whole life, but being a teen is hard for everybody. That's when I felt it was becoming more pronounced and when I got help for it. Since then, I have been working hard at becoming less stressed and less negative. I learned a lot from psychological counseling, but really started getting more mentally healthy when I decided to take it upon myself to get better.
One way I did that is through planning. I have been using a planner for years. Since before I went to college. It has helped me with goal setting and getting results. It makes it easier for me to coordinate my time and feel less negative about myself, since I was on time and and organized in my life. The haziness that comes from major depression was somewhat lifted because I planned.
I have used about every form of planner. At first I made my own from a 3-ring 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 notebook and paper. Then I moved up to a Franklin Covey planner. I have used electronic planners and paper planners...stickers and colored pens.
Another way I handled my depression and anxiety is through keeping a journal - or diary. It has been something I have done since I can remember. When I was a child, I remember writing each night before I went to sleep - sometimes for hours! But it always helped me make sense of the events of the day and provided insight into the reason things were the way they were. I was also able to more easily see how I could change things so I would be less depressed and anxious. Journaling has been a staple and a benefit for my entire life.
When I was in my 40s I had a stroke and lost the ability to effectively use my right hand and foot. I have had to get creative about journaling and planning (since I am right handed). My entrees are messy, but I'm still working at improving my life with planning and journaling.
I have only just started to use affirmation statements in the past few years. They are great! They help me with positivity, confidence, and self-worth, to name a few things. Affirmations generally work as a tool for shifting your mindset and achieving your goals, but they’re not a magic bullet for instant healing. Creating a mental image of yourself doing something activates many of the same brain areas as actually experiencing the situation would. A routine of repetition of affirming statements about yourself can encourage your brain to take these positive affirmations as fact. When you truly believe you can do something, your actions often follow!
These three things together have been a blessing in my life! I have struggled, but with the implementation of them, I have a life and lifestyle that is comfortable and happy. Planning, journaling, and affirmation statements are a lot of work, but worth the effort. I feel happy, well adjusted, and free from stress.
You can use these tools too! I want to provide others with this gear so that they can find relief as well. I'm so excited about this shop and the potential it has to positively impact others. Whether you are new to this or you already do these things and just want some help, I have something for you.
Does this sound like something you are up for? Well, you are in the right place at the right time. I can teach you how...
