Bio

I have never been afraid to challenge the norm. I did not concede to societal assumptions of me being Black, female, and from South Carolina. I had to be me… be free, focused, fearless, and pivotal in my thoughts and actions. This successful “me” lives a life beyond the one I dreamt of while growing up in South Carolina, where opportunities and expectations were limited for someone like me.

I read a lot of encyclopedias, newspapers, and magazines growing up. I created what we now call vision boards on my bedroom walls. I followed my life plan despite the discouragement of those close to me. I followed my vision and graduated from Wellesley College with a B.S. in Biology. I earned my medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine, where I completed my Gynecology and Obstetrics residency.

I am married to an Emergency Medicine physician, Joseph Hathorn. We met at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital, dated for one month, got engaged, and married one year later. We are 20 years strong. Our wedding was featured in Southern Living Weddings. It would be almost ten years before we had our daughter, Carly, and our son, Ethan, followed 2 years later. During the time of no children, Joseph and I pushed hard on entrepreneurial endeavors. We are doctorpreneurs. We knew we wanted certain life opportunities, and working hard at a job with limited time for self, family, and tight resources led to a dead end for us.

If I remained complacent, my crazy vision boards or desires would not be happening. Being uncomfortable made me blossom. Working myself to death and realizing that once I was gone, another doctor would replace me at any moment. However, for my family, I am irreplaceable.

I intend to continue every gift God presents to me in life. I hope others see and understand my process and become encouraged to fearlessly cease moments to live their best lives.
