Solidarity Helping Hand is a community organization focused on the principles of the “Helpmekaar-beweging” (Help each other movement). This movement was established in 1949. The above movement is well known for its steadfast and sustainable values, and therefore to this date, continues to provide the fundamental ethical grounds of Helping Hand. Solidarity Helping Hand aspires to empower and mobilize the Afrikaner society by alleviating, preventing and breaking the cycle of poverty in Afrikaner communities by means of a variety of projects. Approximately 80% of our time and resources is spent on the prevention of poverty, while the other 20% is spent on poverty alleviation. These projects, in line with section 39 of the Constitution, are mobilized and funded by volunteers and benefactors in the Afrikaner society. Solidarity Helping Hand truly is an organization for the community, by the community. One of Helping Hand's greatest assets is our position to influence, train and educate our children and young people in order to prevent them from winding up in the poverty cycle.
Our more than 150 branches nationwide are our “hands and feet” in the community Our projects include the well-known ‘StopHonger’-campaign, where we feed 8 000 children daily. We aspire to reduce the effects of poverty on the lives of women and children by providing sanitary products to 3 000 young women, and we also focus on creating a platform for women where they can feel safe, share their stories, empower other women in need and provide opportunities for further education, with our ‘FroueVonds’-campaign. The “Studiefondssentrum” (Study Fund Centre) offers interest-free study loans to young people for tertiary studies. We have empowered 6 981 students to date, with a total of R126 million. One of our trusts within the above initiative also offers assistant to children whose parents and guardians were victims of farm attacks. Our “HelpJag-project” (Help hunt) asks hunters and the public to donate a carcass from their hunting trips. This initiative ensures that our toddlers and children and all other dependants from the StopHonger-project receive a healthy and hearty portion of protein daily. We also assist children by providing school supplies with our “Tassie-project” and we have numerous projects for the elderly nationwide. Finally, we have almost 50 charity shops nationwide. These shops are called “Ons Winkels”. All the funds generated from these stores are utilized for welfare and social services, and a portion of the funds are also allocated to the education fees for students in need.
