Before changing careers to public relations and business communications, I worked for nine years at three newspapers in the Pacific Northwest - The Western News in Libby, Montana; The Observer in La Grande, Oregon; and the Union-Bulletin in Walla Walla, Washington.
I graduated from the University of Montana, where I studied journalism and history. I was born and raised in Montana. Adopted by two loving parents, Betty and Ed Van Tighem, I grew up with my younger brother, Ted, in a typical middle-class family. My parents were active in the deaf community as my mother was deaf and a teacher at the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind and my father, who was hard of hearing, attended MSDB.
