The teaching of oral and written language has long been called the development of coherent speech. In this case coherent speech is understood as both a process, a speech activity and a certain result of an act of communication, i.e. a pupil's detailed answer on the material of a discipline, oral and written text presentation created by the pupil, an essay, an article for a wall newspaper, description, reasoning, report, etc., i.e. a certain speech work, a text. Each of the speech works outlined in the programme acts as both a learning object (i.e. what is taught specifically) and as a means by which communicative skills are formed and developed.
So, teaching the construction of a text of the type of reasoning-proof, the teacher helps students to be aware of the features of this type of text, to master certain skills, and at the same time all this work serves as a means of development of communicative skills, communicative abilities of man. That is why it is so important to have a clear understanding of the content and sequence of the work to develop coherent speech and an optimal choice of teaching methods and tools appropriate to the tasks.
When determining the content of work on the development of coherent speech of schoolchildren, it is taken into account, what communicative and verbal skills and abilities children come to school with. To determine the level of development of coherent speech of schoolchildren such indicators as the volume of a statement (it is characterized, as a rule, by counting lexemes and sentences); the number of subthemes (microthemes), their compliance with the topic and the idea of the statement, the degree of deployment (established by highlighting the semantic components of the statement and determining their volume); presence of certain language means (for example, expressing cause-effect relations, comparison etc.); diversity of vocabulary, syntactic structures, etc.; the average number of words and phrases, etc.
The choice of the necessary criteria is determined by the specific objectives of the study. These criteria complement each other and allow quantitative data to obtain an objective characteristic of students' speech, the formation of their communicative skills.
