A 3-time TEDx Speaker, Guitarist-Composer-Educator Az Samad has recorded with Grammy Winners Flaco Jiménez & Max Baca; graduated & taught at the prestigious Berklee College of Music; performed in the United States, Europe & Asia; and appeared on 22 CDs ranging in styles from Tex-Mex, Contemporary Jazz to solo acoustic guitar. His works have been described as “richly textured, poetic and atmospheric”. Az has also performed with his father, Malaysian national laureate A. Samad Said, virtuoso violinist Roby Lakatos, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Bumblefoot, singer-songwriter Zee Avi, funky fingerstyle guitarist Adam Rafferty and percussive fingerstyle guitarist Mike Dawes.
Az is an advocate & performer of Malay Jazz, focusing on the music of P. Ramlee & Jimmy Boyle. His DK West song for the upcoming video game ‘No Straight Roads’ combines rap with Malaysian traditional music elements including Dikir Barat. Az’s other recent collaborations include the song Bangkit by Salam Musik & rapper Altimet (678,007 views on YouTube at the time of writing) and Rendra Zawawi’s soundtrack of the M for Malaysia documentary.
Az has also given talks on the digital marketing & social media for the modern musician. He shares real world tips and strategies from his 23 years of experience in music. In 2020, Az is slated to perform in his duo project, The Jazz Bromance with jazz saxophonist Julian Chan and in The Az Samad Trio with Tay Cher Siang (piano) & Julian Chan (saxophone).
