How Does Viagra Work To Improve Erectile Dysfunction?
How well does Viagra work? To know how Viagra actually works, it is first important to have at least a working understanding of what happens when a man becomes sexually aroused. Essentially, the penis has two functions: urination - releasing urine from the penis. Ejaculation, when sperm is discharged from the penis
When the penis becomes "hard," or erect, this causes increased blood flow to the penis. This increased blood flow stimulates the penis, causing it to grow in size and strength. Sometime, drugs are introduced into the body that alter the normal function of these organs. These changes can alter the way they respond to sexual stimuli, which is one of the causes of erectile dysfunction (ED).
Viagra was first introduced into the United States in 1998, and sales started off steadily. After a while, people began to ask how Viagra worked. Viagra's makers maintained that their product worked by increasing blood flow to the penis and "strengthening" the erectile functioning. Viagra was aggressively marketed, and several studies were conducted to answer the question, "How does Viagra work?"
A clinical trial was conducted in which men were randomly chosen to take either a Viagra tablet or a placebo pill. One hundred and sixty men completed the study. Of these hundred and sixty men, seventy-nine had a mild decrease in the erection they got when taking the Viagra. Of the remaining fifty-one men, half of them experienced a worsening in their erectile function, while the other half experienced no change in their erectile function at all. These results indicate that Viagra didn't improve erectile function, but it worsened it.
Another study performed on larger groups of men revealed that Viagra didn't help men with mild erectile dysfunction, but it did worsen it significantly. This time, the results of the study showed that Viagra increased the amount of blood that the body produces during an erection. The increase in blood flow that Viagra caused did not make erectile dysfunction better. Instead, the blood flow worsened the situation. Viagra apparently worked for the subset of men who took the tablets, but the bulk of the sample didn't see any positive effects from taking the medication.
When the issue of how does Viagra work is considered in the context of prostate surgery, the results are somewhat surprising. Viagra is used commonly in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It was originally developed to treat problems with impotence. Because Viagra can decrease the size of the prostate and increase the flow of blood to the penis, this was seen as a natural way to treat erectile dysfunction and didn't require the use of surgery or other drugs.
