THE DAY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING...
It was August 4, 1997, and I just woke up from surgery. I felt...different. That is the best way I could describe it. My arm and my leg were numb; I thought it had just fallen asleep during surgery. I remember thinking, "Great, I'm awake. I'm one step closer to going home and riding my horse. At least I won't have to have another surgery again for a while. This guy is pretty famous and good at what he does- I know he got it all!" I looked over to the tray table on the left side of my bed and saw my guardian angel Caroline that my mom had drawn for me a few days before my surgery. At that moment, I was so thankful to be alive and really looking forward to my future. I looked over to the other side of my room and saw the cot that my mom was sleeping on. Knowing full well that she was dead asleep, I asked, "Mommy, are you awake?" "When can we go home? I wanna see Cherokee!," I told her as if she didn't already know. As she sat up with a groan from the cot, she realized where she was, what was going on, and that it was her daughter talking to her. Instantly, she popped up from the cot and rushed to my bed to hug me. "Oh thank God!" she said, tearing up a bit and hugging me like she hadn't seen me in months. "I was so worried!" she said. "Where's dad?" I asked. She just looked at me for a moment when I asked that. "He just ran to the bathroom; he'll be right back" she said. "Can I get you anything?" "Hey, Karl!" my dad said at that moment as he walked in from the gift shop carrying balloons and stuffed animals. "Daddy!" I yelled with a smile and stretched out my arms. He rushed over to give me a hug. After he hugged me, he just looked at me the same way my mom looked at me. Then he said he'd be right back and quickly left the room before I could ask any questions. I was still a little groggy so I laid back in the bed and must've fallen asleep because when I woke up, my mom, my dad, and Dr. Carson were in my room talking about medical stuff. “Hey, Dr. Carson” I said. He walked over to my bedside and said, “You won’t have to worry about that tumor anymore. I got it all.” I smiled. I heard my dad ask him about my face. Uh, What?!? What’s wrong with my face????? “Oh, that’s just temporary. It’ll be gone in a few days” he replied. Then I heard the doctor’s pager go off and he hurried out of the room before I could ask him anything.
