Car Tales - Paolo Lekai

Porsche introduced the GT3 nameplate in 1999. The 996 GT3's design was focused on racing and lacked many of the items that added unnecessary weight to the car, including the majority of the sound deadening insulation, rear seats, rear speakers, sunroof, and air conditioning. Although A/C and CD/radio became no-cost optional add-ons. The engine set itself apart from most of the other Porsche 996 models, being naturally aspirated and based on the power unit used in the Porsche 911 GT1 race car which is a truly stunning piece of kit (not pictured) that came to life in 1996 with the revival of International GT racing.

The revival of the BPR Global GT Series (later called the FIA GT Championship) got Porsche interest in returning to top level GT racing. Knowing they would be competing against the likes of McLaren and Ferrari with their heavily modified versions of the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40 Porsche knew they had to build a car unlike any other. But when Porsche unveiled the 911 GT1 in 1996 it was clear they had exploited the rule book to the fullest extent and stunned the racing community. They decided to develop a purpose built sports-prototype that would comply with regulations that wasn't a proper 911, nor did it share any of its looks with a 911. It was a road-going race car. The all new 911 GT3 RS certainly continues Porsche's tradition of ludicrous road-going racecars. @car.tales
