My aunt started teaching me how to crochet when I was 12 years old. I thought it was fun but I could never hold the hook and yarn just right, it just always left my hand cramped and sore. After a few lopsided scarfs my attention grew to other creative outlets, so I hung up my yarn and said goodbye to my hooks. Six years later I was introduced to a new form of crochet I had never seen before, amigurumi. I couldn't believe how cute and amazingly impressive these plushies were! I had to learn! Since I had so much trouble in the past holding my hooks I tried something new, holding it 'wrong'. Yeah my aunt and grandma just about had a heart attack when they saw what I was doing, but hey if theres a will there's a way right? After a bit of practice with my new technique and some brushing up on basic stitches I was ready to start! My first amigurumi was a whale. I remember being so impressed with myself for creating something that even closely resembled what I was attempting to make, it still was deformed and had many slipped stitches but I was on my way! Soon after I suffered a back injury that has changed my life. For months I could not leave bed but I took that opportunity to get better and better at crocheting. To me crocheting is such a beautiful art form and self expression. I hope to inspire the creative minds in all of us to push beyond our can'ts and turn them into cans!
