At the beginning of the D’Amelio family’s video titled “Our First Mystery Guest | Dinner With The D'Amelios,” the internet-famous family wonders aloud what celebrity is going to surprise them at the table. Names like Taylor Swift, Dave Chappelle, and Megan Thee Stallion are bandied about as possible people to kick off the new video series. Who finally walks in? James Charles.

With over 23 million YouTube subscribers, James Charles is not not famous. But he routinely hangs out with D’Amelio daughters Charli and Dixie, so booking him for dinner isn’t exactly a coup. In fact, it’s kinda cringeworthy, given the other names tossed around.

Then there’s the video itself. The D’Amelio YouTube channel, which exists alongside solo channels manned by Charli and Dixie, is clearly a baby step towards their upcoming reality show. But it actually suggests they may not be quite ready for the leap. In fact, it's costing Charli hundreds of thousands of TikTok followers

Charli D’Amelio joined TikTok a little over a year ago and has accrued almost 100 million followers—the most of anyone on the app. This is a topic of conversation during the video, leading to a buzzed-about moment when she laments not hitting 100 million before her one year anniversary. Still, in that time, she appeared in a Super Bowl ad, danced in a Jennifer Lopez music video, and launched a makeup line with her sister. By all metrics, the D’Amelio family should be capable of making the leap to traditional celebrities.

At one point in the video, Dixie D’Amelio throws up after taking a bite of snail, which is an ingredient in the paella prepared by chef Aaron May. Later, Charli asks if they have any chicken nuggets. 

“Those girls are acting like that food is disgusting, but the only [thing] that’s disgusting is their manners and attitudes,” one of many angry comments reads. 

The rest of the time, Dixie and Charli seem distracted, unable to even carry on a full conversation. James Charles literally has to cut in at the end for a proper conclusion.

Still, the video isn’t as much a death knell as it is a growing pain. With the Kardashian family going off the air, all signs still point to the D’Amelios as America’s next famous family. They just need to break out of TikTok to get there.
