Before I started using this whitewashed style for my feed, I was focused on very color-saturated pictures. I found after a while that it was hard to get a consistent feel or sense of uniformity on my feed with so many varying bright colors. I now try to limit my photos to only a few major colors.
The whitewashed style attempts to make everything in background white or muted so the only thing that pops is me. I first saw this look on my friend @theskinnyconfidential’s Instagram page and loved it at first site. She showed me how to do it with only one tool, Facetune 2, and about fifteen minutes of work.
When I want to make a whitewashed style post, I look for a base picture with the simplest background. It needs to not be busy (e.g. few people or buildings) and to have limited bright colors so I can reduce or take them out. I also look for awkward face shadows or body positions.
The general process is to open Facetune 2 and use the teeth whitening tool but on the background and specific areas of the photo I want to whiten. I zoom in and out as needed especially around the edges of my body and hair so I can whiten them without making it looked smudged. The whole process probably takes 15 minutes for one picture.
When I am done with the whitening process I use the “smooth” tool for my skin and face to make it glow and pop against the whitened background. I also whiten teeth and the whites of eyes, white nail polish and any white clothing (e.g. belt or bikini). The goal is to get the whites of the picture as stark as possible.
This is a really fun and easy style you can learn very quickly. I would just recommend you experiment with the zoom level you’re editing at. Don’t be afraid to zoom way into the picture to get the edges of a white area crisp. It might seem laborious at first but it’ll end up making for a beautiful final product.
