The time spent studying at university and how the learner copes with the challenges that arise in the process are very important for the course of his or her later life. We see learning as a lifelong process that is not confined to the classroom. It is how one sees oneself in life, how one sets goals, achieves them, and copes with difficulties that is largely determined by the period of study at university. After all, this is the time when a person takes the first step into an adult, independent life.
There may be several interrelated causes and facts at the root of underachievement. Psychologists consider the main causes of failure to be, firstly, all kinds of deficiencies in cognitive activity; secondly, deficiencies in the development of the motivational sphere of students. Self-esteem, i.e. an individual's assessment of himself, his capabilities, qualities and place among other people, being a regulator of human behaviour, influences the efficiency of his activity. Potential self-esteem is often referred to as a pretentiousness level. Attitude is shaped by subjective experiences of success or failure in an activity. Thus, self-efficacy and the related attitudes are the most important motivational factors influencing learning outcomes.
Self-esteem is interpreted as a personal formation, directly involved in the regulation of human behaviour and activity, as an autonomous characteristic of a person, its central component, which is formed with the active participation of the individual and reflects the originality of his inner world. The criteria of learning success are academic (learning) achievement, reflecting the level of learning achievements, as well as interest, motivation, quality and methods of mental work.
Due to individual psychological differences in the structure of learning and cognitive activity, some students achieve high results in learning quite quickly and easily, others - relatively slow, and some cannot approach them at all. In this case we talk about such properties of human mental development as learning ability and educability, which mean internal readiness to various psychological restructurings and transformations in accordance with new programs of further education and upbringing acquired under the influence of education, training and upbringing.
Learning and nurturing become the most important conditions and factors in the further development of the individual and his formation as a personality and activity subject.
